Bridging the preclinical-clinical boundary

The preclinical-clinical boundary is a key checkpoint in the translational pathway for research. It refers to the point at which preclinical evidence is considered sufficient to merit the move to first-in-human clinical studies, and represents a significant escalation in both resourcing and time, with a high risk of failure. Therefore there is a drive to ensure that the evidence base for progression into clinical studies is as robust and predictive as possible to maximise the chances of success and minimise risk of failure.

Early detection and diagnosis research in cancer

One of the key ways to improve cancer outcomes is to detect and diagnose at an earlier stage when cancers are far more treatable. However, a limitation to the earlier diagnosis of some cancers is the lack of technologies that can detect very early indicators of disease. This means research into novel tests and innovations, and the rapid implementation of effective interventions into the healthcare system, are crucial.

Improving the development and deployment of rapid diagnostic tests in South East Asia

The Academy of Medical Sciences, in collaboration with the Philippines National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), convened a policy workshop on rapid diagnostic tests in South East Asia in Manila, Philippines on the 23-24 October 2018.

Advancing research to tackle multimorbidity: the UK and LMIC perspectives

On 20 and 21 June 2018, the Academy hosted a two-day workshop on the topic of multimorbidity together with the MRC (now part of UKRI), the NIHR, and Wellcome.

The Academy of Medical Sciences, in collaboration with the African Academy of Sciences, convened a policy workshop on maternal and newborn survival and stillbirths in sub-Saharan Africa in Nairobi, Kenya on the 4-5 September 2018.

AMS response to the Next Generation Researchers Initiative

In response to a request from the US National Academy of Sciences, the Academy produced a paper providing a UK snapshot of efforts by the research community to aid the transition to independent research careers for biomedical researchers. The Academy's paper was published in May 2018.

Controlled Human Infection Model studies

The Academy of Medical Sciences, Wellcome, and the Human Infection Challenge vaccine network convened a one-day workshop on how to develop the environment for Controlled Human Infection Model studies in the UK. The report of the workshop was published in July 2018.
