The Academy's home at 41 Portland Place, London, was formerly used by the Ciba Foundation to promote international cooperation in medical research.
The Swiss pharmaceutical company Ciba, now Novartis, acquired 41 Portland Place in 1947. 41 Portland Place became the hub for a generation of world-class post-war scientists: exceptional scientific exchange fostered through meetings, publications, and hospitality.
83 Nobel laureates attended symposia at 41 Portland Place, several of whom cited the meetings as crucial in stimulating subsequent research breakthroughs. Key agreements in the building included the international nomenclature on bodily steroids, the first discussions on stem cells, and the first announcements of the importance of the human thymus. Frances Crick and Rosalind Franklin are recorded as having met within the building.
In 2007 the Novartis Foundation trustees granted the Academy permission to use their building for our ongoing work. In 2010, the Academy completed a £5 million fundraising appeal for the refurbishment of 41 Portland Place. We are delighted that we raised the funds to refurbish the building and are immensely grateful to everyone who generously donated to our appeal, including the Fellowship who contributed so generously to the Fellows' Appeal. This enabled us to create our own independent, professional headquarters in the heart of medical London. The Academy moved into the building in October 2010. Having our own headquarters allows us to perform our mission and serve our Fellowship even more effectively. It provides a medical science hub for our Fellows and the community we work with across our activities.
We offer Academy Fellows, friends and family a range of exclusive packages and a 20% discount on all venue hire.

We also have a range of private, free facilities for Fellows available at 41 Portland Place. One of the key benefits of our dedicated headquarters at 41 Portland Place is the facilities we can offer Fellows. We designed the building with Fellows in mind and aim to provide you with a useful base in central London. Find out more here.
