At 2018 New Fellows Admission Day on 27 June, we welcomed newly elected Fellows for their formal admission to the Academy.
On the day, 34 Fellows newly elected in 2018 were joined by seven Fellows from the 2016 and 2017 election cycles for the Admission Ceremony, held at the Royal College of Physicians. The programme included presentations from four of this year's new Fellows about their research:

Professor Peter Hutchinson FMedSci
Professor of Neurosurgery, University of Cambridge
Cinderella science?
Professor Susan Jebb OBE FMedSci
Professor of Diet and Population Health, University of Oxford
Rucaparib – a story of academic cancer drug discovery and development
Professor Ruth Plummer FMedSci
Professor of Experimental Cancer Medicine, Newcastle University
The Why and How of Human Sleep Research
Professor Derk-Jan Dijk FMedSci

Professor Dijk kindly stepped in for Professor Timothy Leighton FRS FREng FMedSci, Professor of Ultrasonics and Underwater Acoustics at the University of Southampton, who had been due to talk about his research on the physics of bubbles and his work applying this to develop new medical devices.
In the morning, new Fellows participated in induction sessions, starting with a panel discussion on the Academy's work with senior staff. Fellows were also introduced to the developmental model of mentoring in a workshop facilitated by Professor Fiona Karet FMedSci. The day concluded with Fellows, guests and staff enjoying an evening celebration at the Academy's headquarters at 41 Portland Place.
Videos from the day, including the new Fellows’ presentations, will be available on the Academy's YouTube channel later this summer.
