On 11 December 2013, we saw the first Winter Science Meeting for Starter Grant Awardees at the Academy of Medical Sciences.
More than 50 grant holders from the Starter Grants for Clinical Lecturers scheme convened to present their work, competing for a Poster Prize, Oral Prize and Communications Prize.
Delegates were given the opportunity to speak to funders and Fellows of the Academy, network with their peers, and listen to a range of talks on everything from childhood nutrition and heart failure to career advice and grant applications.
Professor Sir John Tooke PMedSci was delighted to award the following prizes at the end of the day:
· Poster Prize: Dr James Lee, University of Cambridge
· Oral Prize: Dr Karin Straathof, UCL Institute of Child Health , and David Hunt, University of Edinburgh
· Communications Prize: Dr Karin Straathof, UCL Institute of Child Health
There was also a fringe event, “Is laughter the best medicine?” starring Professor Sophie Scott FMedSci, Dr Steve Cross and a host of fantastic researchers who took to the stage to talk about their work. A film made at this event will be available online later this month on the Academy’s YouTube channel.
The Academy would like to thank everyone who joined us on the day, including representatives from the scheme’s funders, the Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council, British Heart Foundation, Arthritis Research UK and Prostate Cancer UK.

The next round of applications for Starter Grants for Clinical Lecturers will open on 10 January 2014, with an application submission deadline of 3 March 2014.
