Addressing antimicrobial resistance with a One Health approach invite-only symposium and workshop

09.00, Wednesday 29 May 2024

This is an invite-only two day symposium, followed by a one day policy workshop taking place in New Delhi. If you would like more information, please contact jessamyn.briers@acmedsci.sc.uk

This joint symposium and policy workshop hosted by the UK Academy of Medical Sciences and the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) will examine how to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) with a One Health Approach.

The UK and India, along with the rest of the world, face significant challenges caused by AMR. As these problems can be similar worldwide, there can be substantial benefits to sharing knowledge and experiences internationally, and by creating opportunities for international collaboration.

In 2019 the UK Academy of Medical Sciences hosted a symposium on AMR in London, supported by the Yusuf and Farida Hamied Foundation. It looked at the extent of the AMR problem in both the UK and India, measuring progress, and interventions to prevent and manage infections. Findings from previous and ongoing collaborative research on the interactions of human health, animal health, and the environment were shared and how successes could be applied elsewhere. It was also an opportunity to discuss research and policy actions that could be taken in the UK and India.

We are now hosting a second symposium followed by a policy workshop in partnership with the ICMR to examine the progress made in tackling AMR, reflect on the research and policy actions that have been taken since 2019 in the UK and India, and agree on the actions that need to happen next. The symposium and workshop will also be a chance to further increase collaborations between the UK and India to help to tackle the shared problem of AMR, and will be an opportunity to reflect on the outcomes of any partnerships that have been built including those by the Academy’s Visiting Fellowship scheme, also supported by the Hamied Foundation.
