Two Fellows elected to the British Academy in 2018

Two Fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences have been elected to the British Academy in 2018.

Professor Sir David Cannadine, President of the British Academy said:

“I am delighted to welcome this year’s exceptionally talented new Fellows to the Academy. Including historians and economists, neuroscientists and legal theorists, they bring a vast range of expertise, insights and experience to our most distinguished fellowship.”

The newly elected Fellows are:

Professor Eleanor Maguire FBA FRS FMedSci, Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London

Professor Edmund Sonuga-Barke FBA FMedSci, Professor of Developmental Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience, King’s College London

Professor Maguire is famed for her work on the spatial abilities of London taxicab drivers, having shown that the acquisition of ‘the knowledge’ leads to changes in the size of parts of their hippocampus. Her work has provided evidence on the link between spatial memory and more general episodic memory for everyday occurrences, with important implications for patients with hippocampal damage. She has previously spoken at the Academy of Medical Sciences Spring Meeting (now CATAC).

Professor Sonuga-Barke's work has radically changed our understanding of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, taking the field from a fixed deficit theory about attention to the modern view, based on several alterations of decision-making and response to reward, responsive to environmental change as well as constitution.

Both Professor Maguire and Professor Sonuga-Barke are also mentors with the Academy's mentoring programme.
