Response to the appointment of Professor Lucy Chappell FMedSci as new Chief Scientific Adviser

In response to the news that Professor Lucy Chappell FMedSci has been appointed as the new Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) for the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), Professor Philippa Saunders FRSE FMedSci, Registrar of the Academy of Medical Sciences, said:

“Professor Lucy Chappell FMedSci is a brilliant choice for this position. She is a highly valued colleague of mine in the field of women’s health and at the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecoloists she has taken a leading role in promoting and safeguarding all aspects of academic obstetrics and gynaecology.

“I was delighted when Professor Chappell became a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences last year and she has already become a very valuable member of one of the Academy’s sectional committees, helping to assess new Fellow candidates, demonstrating her willingness and enthusiasm as an active and committed Fellow.

“Professor Chappell has done some truly innovative work in clinical trials looking at biomarkers for the life-threatening pregnancy condition preeclampsia, for example the PARROT trial, which has already led to changes in clinical practice. She is also an excellent communicator with a calm and open manner and I cannot think of anyone better placed to work in government as an advisor.”
