President welcomes UK Government’s engagement with future European research

Yesterday (March 6) the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) published a position paper on the next EU research and innovation framework programme that will commence in 2021.

The Academy’s President, Professor Sir Robert Lechler PMedSci said:

“This is a much needed indication from the UK Government that they intend to continue to work with the EU to help shape the future of our shared European research endeavour. These recommendations are highly consistent with those from the Commission’s own advisory group, demonstrating yet again the clear alignment between the UK and the EU on matters of research.

“It is my hope that we can turn this consensus into a firm agreement from both sides, about how the scientific relationship between the UK and the EU will be maintained after Brexit.”

This document follows the publication of guidance for UK-based applicants to Horizon 2020, which was published on the 5 March.
