New President of FEAM: Professor George Griffin FMedSci

We are delighted to announce that Professor George Griffin FMedSci is the new President of the Federation of European Academies of Medicine (FEAM).

On Friday 25 May, Professor Bernard Charpentier handed over the FEAM Presidency to Academy Fellow, Professor George Griffin, for a three-year term.  

Professor George Griffin is a Fellow of ours and is due to complete his term as Vice President International of the Academy on New fellows Day, Wednesday 27 June. He is Emeritus Professor of Infectious Diseases and Medicine at the St George’s University of London. Professor Griffin's chief clinical contributions have been in the characterisation of intestinal disease in HIV infection, mechanism of weight loss in HIV and definition of loss of mucosal immune response in advanced HIV infection.

Professor George Griffin FMedSci, said:

“I am delighted to step into the position as President of FEAM and am eager to build on the excellent work achieved by Professor Charpentier over the past three years, supporting the 18 member European national Academies to ensure that best evidence is always at the heart of European biomedical policy.

“The Academy of Medical Sciences was a great help in the establishment of FEAM, and as Vice President International of the Academy I have worked closely with FEAM over the past years. During this time, I am thrilled to have seen FEAM grow in reach and influence across the exciting landscape of the biomedical sciences and look forward to working more on this.

“Now, more than ever, the UK needs to put considerable efforts into keeping and building upon its strong links with Europe. The Academy’s governing board is dedicated to ensuring that the relationship between the UK and Europe is one that best serves the health of the people within these countries. I will proudly take forward this commitment in my new role as FEAM President.”

FEAM is the European umbrella group of national Academies of Medicine and Medical Sections of Academies of Sciences. It brings together 18 national Academies representing over 5000 among the best scientists in Europe.
