Engaging medical students with research

We are pleased to announce that Professor David Wynford-Thomas FMedSci has accepted an invitation to chair the INSPIRE selection panel. The current chair, Professor Peter Mathieson FMedSci, has stepped down from the role following his appointment as Vice Chancellor at Hong Kong University. We are hugely grateful to Professor Mathieson for his excellent work in establishing the scheme, and congratulate him most warmly on his new position.

The Academy team has recently visited INSPIRE leads in Belfast, Liverpool and Exeter, with more visits to come. Many interesting activities are already taking place, ranging from symposiums and journal clubs to vacation studentships and the development of online databases of research opportunities. Student research societies have taken a key role in implementing local activities and engaging their peers.

The Academy will host a development workshop on 27 June 2014 to enable medical schools to showcase activity, share learning, identify best practice and develop new ideas. All INSPIRE leads and student representatives, as well as other stakeholders, will be invited to attend. More details about the workshop will follow next year.
