Academy receives gift of Medicinal Herbals

In January 2015, Professor Malcolm Lader OBE FMedSci kindly donated his library of illustrated herbals to the Academy.

The collection of over 100 herbals focuses on English herbals such as those of Turner, Gerard, Parkinson, and Culpeper. Herbals have a long history, the first examples dating back to Ancient Egypt, China, India, Greece, Rome, and the Arab world.

This represents a most generous gift worth £50,000 to the Academy.

Gifts like this contribute to the Academy’s objective of remaining financially sustainable allowing us to continue our important work in improving health through research.

While everyone may not have a collection to donate, you can still support the Academy’s activities by joining our Helix Group. This group includes our most significant supporters who donate £250 or more each year to the Academy. Click here to find out more about the Helix Group.

The Malcolm Lader Collection of Medicinal Herbals is currently on display in the Fellows Room at the Academy’s headquarters – 41 Portland Place, London. You can also read more about the collection, including a full catalogue, in the Support Us section.
