Now open: Springboard grant scheme round 4

We are delighted to announce the winners of the third round of Springboard and welcome new applications for our fourth round.

Springboard offers a bespoke package of support to biomedical researchers at the start of their first independent post to help launch their research careers. This includes funding of up to £100,000 over two years and access to the Academy’s highly acclaimed mentoring and career development programmes. Springboard embraces the broad diversity of biomedical research and equally supports molecular, cellular and structural biology to anatomical, physiological, psychological, epidemiological and public health research areas.

We are pleased to announce the 32 winners of round three of Springboard. These awards span the full breadth of biomedical science and a full list of awardees can be found here. Round three is the first Springboard round to include five awardees who address GCRF aims, promoting the welfare and economic development of countries on the UK’s Official Developmental Assistance list. We would like to congratulate our awardees, and we look forward to hearing about the outcomes of their research in the near future.

Prospective applicants to round four should first contact the Springboard Champion within their HEI to express their interest in the scheme and find out how their internal selection will operate. The deadline for the selected applicants to submit their online eligibility check form is Tuesday 1 May 2018. Following the eligibility round, applicants who have been selected by their HEI will be invited to submit a full application via Flexi-Grant by Monday 16 July 2018.

Professor Philippa Saunders FMedSci, Chair of the Springboard Panel, has a vision for the scheme, “to identify researchers whose independent career is primed for take-off and have a brilliant idea with which to take that leap”. She thinks that universities should give full backing to researchers in their first independent position, including through tangible financial support.

The Academy is delighted to have convened a consortium of funders for the scheme. Thus far, Springboard has been supported by: Wellcome Trust, the British Heart Foundation, the UK Government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) and Talent Fund.
