Europe 2020 strategy

In October 2014, the Academy submitted a joint response to the European Commission’s consultation on the Europe 2020 strategy. The response was also signed by a number of the UK's medical research and healthcare organisations, including Alzheimer’s Research, Arthritis Research UK, the Association of Medical Research Charities, the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Genetic Alliance UK, the International Brain Tumour Alliance, the NHS European Office, Parkinson’s UK and the Wellcome Trust.

The response welcomed the inclusion of research and innovation with Europe’s growth plan, and emphasised the importance of the Horizon 2020 programme for supporting growth and health gains. It highlighted the need to forge an environment which promoted a skilled and mobile workforce, and called for future European legislation to create a supportive regulatory setting for research.
