Supporting UK life sciences clusters

On 1 February 2017, the Academy and Wellcome Trust held a FORUM meeting on ‘Geographical clusters’ at Newcastle University, as a follow-up to the successful 2015 workshop.

The FORUM workshop was co-chaired by Professor Chris Day FMedSci, Vice-Chancellor and President of Newcastle University and Professor Stephen Caddick, Director of Innovations at the Wellcome Trust, and brought together representatives from across the life sciences including cluster leads, academia, industry trade bodies and clinicians, amongst others.

Over the course of the day, delegates discussed a vision for the future, the challenges faced by clusters in the current environment and possible ways forward, also in the context of the Government’s recently launched Industrial Strategy Green Paper. The workshop discussions emphasised the importance of collaboration and connectivity across the clusters for creating a strong, combined UK offering or ‘voice’ founded on the strengths of the individual life sciences hubs, and set out next steps for achieving such a unified network. To find out more about the event, please visit the FORUM events page. A report of the meeting will be published in due course.
