Thoughts on the FORUM

To celebrate 15 years of the FORUM, we asked some of our key speakers and contributors for their thoughts on the programme.

“Advances in genetics and enhanced computational methods are providing us with a unique opportunity to better understand disease and develop new medicines.  To maximise our chances of success it is essential for the Life Sciences sector to work together.

“The Academy of Medical Sciences’ FORUM provides the opportunity to bring together people with a common passion for treating diseases, whether we are representing academia, industry, the NHS or the wider healthcare sector.  I have found discussions with other thought leaders at FORUM meetings incredibly valuable in informing my ideas as I set about building the new Discovery Hub for MSD”

Dr Fiona Marshall FMedSci, VP Head of Discovery Research MRL UK at MSD

“Collaboration and integration across sectors is increasingly vital to ensure that research and innovation are embedded at the heart of the NHS. Vehicles for catalysing such links, such as the independent platform provided by the Academy of Medical Sciences’ FORUM, are essential for bringing the many components of the health and life sciences ecosystem together, to facilitate discussion, build collaboration and drive changes in research and health policy and practice for the benefits of patients.”

Professor Sir Malcolm Grant CBE, Chairman of NHS England

"The FORUM is unique in providing a neutral, collaborative space that brings regulators together with academia, industry, funders, Government and many others.

"It capitalises on this breadth of expertise to facilitate important and timely discussions around the regulatory and broader life sciences landscape in the UK, in partnership with the research community.

"For example, one workshop explored progress in the regulation and governance landscape for health research in the UK, five years on from the Academy’s 2011 Review. Held in collaboration with CRUK and Wellcome, it demonstrated some of the key challenges in the research landscape such as the misinterpretation and misapplication of guidance, and the need for greater proportionality across many different aspects of health research including clinical trials.

"The FORUM is critical in bringing stakeholders together to address such barriers to ensure that the UK continues to be a destination of choice for medical research, and this meeting demonstrates its value in identifying and discussing such issues."

Professor Sir Michael Rawlins GBE Kt FMedSci, Chairman of the MHRA
