SUSTAIN is now open for applications

SUSTAIN, the Academy's flagship programme empowering female researchers to thrive in their independent research careers, is now open for applications.

To be eligible for this prestigious programme, you should be a female researcher who holds an eligible award, as outlined in the application guidelines. We are delighted to continue our partnerships with the Medical Research Council and Royal Society on SUSTAIN and are excited to announce that the Royal Academy of Engineering are joining the SUSTAIN consortia for round three.

Dr Andrew Clark, Director of Programmes at the Royal Academy of Engineering, said:

"The Royal Academy of Engineering is delighted to be able to join the Academy of Medical Sciences, Royal Society and Medical Research Council in supporting the SUSTAIN programme. We are excited by this additional opportunity for our female Research Fellows to find the support that they need to fulfil their career ambitions.”

Dr Helen Munn, Executive Director of the Academy of Medical Sciences, said:

"SUSTAIN is all about the Academy of Medical Sciences' commitment to ensuring that women in STEM can excel, and we are delighted to be receiving applications from academic doctors, scientists and engineers for round three of this important programme. I am so looking forward to meeting this cohort.”

SUSTAIN was created in response to a mounting evidence base showing that not enough female researchers in science secure senior leadership positions in the UK. It is a unique programme in the UK that provides a group of 24 female researchers with a fantastic opportunity to benefit from a year-long programme of individualised support tailored to their career needs, as well as building cross-discipline cohorts who act as a support network to one another far beyond the end of the programme.

A SUSTAIN participant said:

"I feel SUSTAIN has been a very valuable investment in me as a person and will strengthen me, help me find coping strategies and confidence to make and mark my way.”
