Academy President responds to Science and Technology Committee report on immigration

The Science and Technology Committee yesterday published their report on an immigration system that works for science and innovation.

The Academy President, Professor Sir Robert Lechler PMedSci, responded to the publication by saying:

“I am pleased to see today’s report and the scrutiny that the Science and Technology Committee have given to supporting the mobility of researchers, an area which needs serious attention.

“I have always emphasised that the greatest challenge posed to UK medical research by leaving the EU is keeping the UK as a highly attractive place for talented researchers and their colleagues and families to work and build a home in.

“Non-UK nationals make extremely important contributions to UK science. As this report so rightly recognises, supporting this in the future requires an immigration system that enables the recruitment and retention of talented individuals from around the world, as well as their families and dependants.

“I look forward to seeing the government response to the proposals laid out in today’s report.”

The Academy jointly responded to the inquiry with the UK national Academies and our submission can be found here.
