Professor David Nutt FMedSci awarded the 2013 John Maddox Prize

Professor David Nutt FMedSci has been announced as this year's winner of the John Maddox Prize, awarded jointly by Sense About Science, Nature and the Kohn Foundation.

Speaking of the award, Professor Nutt said: "“Science is arguably the defining characteristic of humanity. It therefore is imperative that scientists play their full role in all aspects of human life. Being awarded this prize gives me the confidence to continue to do what’s right, and hopefully will inspire others to follow suit.”

The John Maddox Prize is awarded each year to an individual who has promoted sound science and evidence on a matter of public interest. Its emphasis is on those who have faced difficulty or hostility in doing so.

The judging panel's comments were full of praise for the work that Professor Nutt has done in advocating evidence-based policy.
