Election of next Academy President - extension of deadline for nominations

We have extended the deadline for the search for our next President to 30 June 2020 in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In view of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and on the recommendation of the Search Committee convened to oversee the appointment of the next Academy President, the Academy Council has approved a written Resolution to delay the existing timetable governing the election of the next Academy President but without a delay to the new President's starting date.

Under the Council Resolution, developed with legal advice and approved on 7 April 2020, the current deadline for nominations of 30 April 2020 will be extended to 30 June 2020. Candidate interviews will be conducted before 30 September 2020 (exact dates to be announced) with a view to the Academy Council electing their preferred candidate at their meeting of 15 October instead of the originally envisaged date of 18 June. We hope this decision will assist potential candidates, many of whom are likely to be involved in some way with the coronavirus national response. Fellows will be notified of the appointment of the next President on 22 October 2020 and the incoming President will take office at the AGM on 3 December - as was originally scheduled.

A full role description and details of the election process are available to download from this page.

The lead on the Search Committee, Professor Paul Stewart FMedSci, has shared his thoughts on the search for the next President here.

The Academy is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. Suggestions and expressions of interest are welcome from any area of the Fellowship and should be sent confidence, to Professor Paul Stewart at p.m.stewart@leeds.ac.uk

Fellows wishing to discuss the role further are invited to contact Professor Stewart at the earliest opportunity.

The revised deadline for receipt of completed nominations is 30 June 2020. Council will elect the next President at its October meeting.
