Celebrating our New Fellows

The Academy was proud to welcome 57 new Fellows at our Admissions Day celebrations last month. Making this our largest Admissions Ceremony to date, the Academy admitted 42 of the Fellows elected in 2019 as well as people elected in earlier years unable to attend previously. Held on Wednesday 26 June 2019, it was a pleasure to meet our New Fellows and their guests and family, and formally welcome them to the Academy.

Four New Fellows presented engaging and accessible snapshots of their research - Professor Mary Herbert FMedSci, Professor Harry Hemingway FMedSci, Professor Sarah Cleaveland OBE FRS FRSE FMedSci and Professor Nicholas Wareham FMedSci. Congratulations to them all - watch their talks here.

The afternoon also included an Extraordinary General Meeting convened to cover business connected to the Academy's application for Royal Charter status. Before presenting the resolutions for Fellowship approval, the President informed the meeting that on 12 June 2019 the Queen in Council had granted a Royal Charter for the Academy. The Charter itself will be sealed later in the summer, at which point the new body will formally exist.

The day ended with a summer soirée for Fellows and their guests at the Academy headquarters, 41 Portland Place.

Photographs from the day can be viewed in our online gallery.
