Mentoring workshop for HIVE users with Alexis Hutson

We are glad to announce that all HIVE members will soon be eligible to take part in our mentoring scheme! This is an opportunity for alumni who weren't eligible during their award, to be able to join it now as mentees, and for those who were aleardy eligible during their award, to continue to have access to the programme as an alumni.

To celebrate the incorporation of our mentoring scheme to HIVE users, we will be hosting a mentoring workshop next Thrusday 31 March 2022, 14:00-15:30 BST aimed for the HIVE community interested in starting a mentoring relationship as a mentee or a mentor, or simply keen to learn more about mentoring. This is a chance for alumni interested in becoming Academy mentees, but also those who want to become mentors. Soon after this event, we'll inform you on how to get a mentor for the Academy.

Our mentoring scheme's mentors are Academy Fellows at the moment, but if you'd like to be a mentor, you can still be one for a different scheme. You can get in touch on mentoring@acmedsci.ac.uk for more information, as we are registering interest at the moment. We are often asked to suggest mentors for other schemes and are continually innovating in our own scheme.

The masterclass will be facilitated by Alexis Hutson, an experienced coach and who has been mentoring doctors for over 15 years and has been running her own independent coaching & mentoring practice since 2009. The session is an introduction to the Developmental Model of mentoring that we support, to help you get the most out of your mentoring relationship. It is participatory and focussed on developing techniques, learning best practice and discussing the opportunities and challenges of being in a mentoring relationship, as well as networking with other people in the HIVE community.

As a result of this 90 minute virtual workshop, you will have a clear understanding of:

  • The roles of mentor and mentee.
  • How to establish and manage expectations.
  • How to deal with potential challenges during a mentoring relationship.
  • How to ask good questions and give and receive feedback.
  • Unconscious bias and mentoring.

This virtual event is open to Academy alumni of our grant schemes and programmes (members of the HIVE programme), including researchers from all over the world through our international grants. You can join us from wherever you are based in the UK or around the world.
