The highs and lows of academic-industrial collaborations
Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell FRS FMedSci
The UK is recognised for its world-class biomedical research in both industry and academia. However, the two sectors face challenges: universities strive to deliver their research for social and economic benefit and engage more effectively with the commercial world, and industry increasingly seeks new ideas and approaches to drug discovery from the academic world.
Better partnership seems to be the obvious answer, yet the two sectors do not always enjoy the most effective or comfortable relationships. If UK biomedical research is to maintain its position amongst world leaders we must address the hurdles and limitations to successful partnership.
