We are grateful for everything our Fellows do to support the Academy, but must ask for more to help navigate this difficult time. By making a donation you can ensure we continue to respond rapidly to the changing landscape, support researchers and ensure that lessons are learned from the pandemic, with systems built to deal with future challenges.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenging time for everyone. Our independent voice has never been more important and the demand for our expertise never greater.
Our evidence-based policy advice projects have been turned around in 6-8 weeks, rather than our usual 12-18 month timelines. These projects have involved early career researchers, patients, carers, and members of the public, alongside Fellows. As a result we have had 12 features on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme, TV appearances across all major news channels, more than 200,000 downloads of our winter report (which also got mentioned in Prime Minister's Questions), and a huge new audience for the Academy.
In addition this year, many researchers have had their research and careers severely disrupted, meaning we have needed to provide both practical support as well as online networking and advice.
One of the great misconceptions about the Academy is that we are financially well off and benefit from endowment income. This is not the case and many people do not realise that we are a charity. Each year we must raise the funds to support our programmes and policy work. We rely on our conference business at 41 Portland Place to contribute significant income to the Academy but, out of necessity, it has been closed for most of the last year which has left a shortfall in our funding of £200,000. That’s why we need your help, now more than ever.
