Forty four new Fellows were admitted to the Academy at New Fellows Admissions Day on 2 July.
As well as the prestigious admission ceremony itself, the day included presentations on: 'Exploring human variation and its impact on proteins and in the clinic’ by Professor Dame Janet Thornton DBE FRS FMedSci; 'Lymphoid malignancy and precision medicine: made for each other' by Professor Peter Johnson FMedSci and 'En route to mending a broken heart’ by Professor Paul Riley FMedSci.
We were also joined, for their formal admission to the Academy, by a small number of Fellows elected through the 2013 election cycle who were unable to attend last year’s ceremony.
The afternoon also included the admission of Dr Bruce Alberts CBE as an Honorary Fellow of the Academy and the 2014 Raymond and Beverley Sackler Distinguished Lecture in the Medical Sciences `Disruptions on the highways of cell communication’ which was given by Professor Dario Alessi FRS FRSE FMedSci, Director, MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit, University of Dundee.
Following the formal proceedings of the day, Fellows and guests enjoyed a barbecue supper at the Academy headquarters building in Portland Place.
