He has made an outstanding contribution towards promoting the use of medical science in the practice of medicine, both in the UK and internationally. He has been assiduous in ensuring that the Institute’s various forms of advice are based on the use of evidence of clinical and cost effectiveness that has been developed by the biomedical science community. His determination to base health policy and practice on the available evidence, coupled with rigorous processes and methods, has led to the acceptance of NICE’s guidance products by government, the professions and the public.
