Professor Martin Roland is Director of the National Primary Care Research and Development Centre at Manchester University. He is at the leading edge of academic general practice. His contributions span outstanding leadership of his discipline as well as research. His research is notable for tackling those difficult areas of organisation and practitioner behaviour, which underpin good general medical practice. He is an international authority on back pain in primary care and has contributed to clarifying the natural history and outcome of the condition. His work on the five minute consultation strongly assisted the case for extending the length of general practice consultations.
