Julian Downward is associate director at Cancer Research UK’s London Research Institute. His work on Ras GTPase and on growth factor receptor tyrosine kinases has provided seminal contributions to our understanding of how cellular signal transduction pathways are subverted during oncogenic transformation. He has used high throughput, genome-scale techniques to seek new components of signalling pathways involved in aspects of the Ras oncogene transformed phenotype. These have led to the identification of novel proteins involved in oncogene-induced senescence, invasion and drug resistance, some of which are now being explored as targets for cancer therapy.
