Iain McInnes is Director of the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation at the University of Glasgow. He is an authority on the pathogenesis and treatment of inflammatory arthritis. His early studies identified the expression and functional importance of a number of cytokines in rheumatoid synovitis. Subsequent studies identified regulators of synovial cytokine production. He characterised the anti-inflammatory role for statins in arthritis models and in the clinic via a placebo-controlled trial in rheumatoid arthritis. He also led the first placebo-controlled studies to investigate vascular surrogate risk modulation following TNF and IL-6 receptor blockade.
