Gero Miesenböck is Waynflete Professor of Physiology at the University of Oxford. He is the principal architect of optogenetics, a technology that is transforming neuroscience from an observational to an interventionist discipline. While initially focussing on the development of tools for investigating brain function Miesenböck’s work has now turned to the application of these tools to biological problems. The basic science he is now engaged upon is a prerequisite for advances in mental health. His scientific achievements are laying down fundamental principles of neural architecture.
