Her mastery of epidemiological method combined with detailed understanding of such aspects of infection as microbiology, immunology and mathematical modelling has resulted in world recognition as a leader in her field. Her advice has led to changes in vaccination policy including the introduction of meningococcal C conjugate vaccines in Africa. More recently she has conducted studies on the efficacy of recent H1N1 pandemic influenza vaccines. She played a key role in her scientific research on the safety of MMR vaccines confounding the persistent attacks by the anti-vaccination lobby.
