Professor and Head of the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Cambridge, David Rowitch is an exceptional academic paediatrician who has made significant contributions to neuroscience. Professor Rowitch’s approach has been to apply developmental genetics to understand fundamental mechanisms of glial biology. This research has yielded insight into the basis for white matter lesions leading to cerebral palsy and neuron circuit abnormalities in preterm infants. Professor Rowitch has made remarkable clinical contributions; At UCSF, he established the first “Neuro-intensive Care Nursery,” and he also directs a first-in-man Phase I study of neural stem cell transplant into the human brain for leukodystrophy as an approach for demyelinating disorders.
