Giovanna Lombardi is Professor of Human Transplant Immunobiology at King’s College London and is one of the leading human immunologists of her generation. She has elucidated the molecular basis of allorecogniton of foreign MHC molecules by T lymphocytes, the events that drive transplant rejection. She has also gone on to elucidate the importance of the indirect and semi-direct pathways of allorecognition in graft rejection. These insights are key to the design of strategies to promote transplantation tolerance. Professor Lombardi’s scientific career is an outstanding exemplar of bench to bedside research with enormous potential for patient benefit.
