Edzard Ernst is Professor of Complementary Medicine at Peninsula Medical School. He is the world’s first professor of Complementary Medicine and has used scientific and statistical approaches to try to ascertain what is effective and what is not effective. He has highlighted that alternative and complementary therapies are by no means always harmless and that possible side effects have to be considered just as they do for conventional therapies. His prominent role in promoting rigorous scientific enquiry into complementary and alternative medicine represents a unique contribution to medical science. This will be of great practical service to the Academy in an area on which it is frequently consulted.
