Academy seeks new regional champions

We are seeking four new Regional Champions to lead the Academy’s work in Wales, Scotland, the South West, and the North West.

These Regional Champions from across the country play a vital role to promote and connect the Academy and its Fellowship in their area. We are seeking expressions of interest for the role from Fellows to in the following regions: Wales, Scotland, the South West, and the North West (including Northern Ireland).

Regional Champions are provided with dedicated funding for events, opportunities to meet with the Academy’s Regional Champions network, and access to resources, insight and support from the Academy’s staff. Any Fellow within these regions is eligible to apply for these three year roles.

Academy President, Professor Sir Robert Lechler PMedSci who oversees the programme, says: “Becoming a Regional Champion offers Fellows a way to capitalise on their understanding of their local research community. Their fresh ideas, knowledge and experience drive our local work in career development, networking, coordinating diverse Fellowship nominations, regional strategy and more.”

The Academy of Medical Sciences’ network of Regional Champions was established in 2014 by former Vice President Professor Martin Humphries FMedSci.

In the past six months, our existing champions have helped us to organise 22 regional-focused events in 11 different cities (Birmingham, Brighton, Cambridge, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Exeter, Leeds, Leicester, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield and Southampton). These events have included a programme of horizon scanning, competitions and career development opportunities for early career researchers, regional celebrations of success, public lectures, research conferences and networking events for local Fellows.

The four Regional Champions handing on their positions this summer are: Professor Jane Norman FMedSci (Scotland); Professor Ole Petersen CBE FRS FMedSci (Wales); Professor Jonathan Slack FMedSci (South West), and Professor Susan Wray FMedSci (North West and Northern Ireland). We would like to sincerely thank these Fellows for serving with such enthusiasm and commitment, and look forward to working with those who will next take on these roles.

A person specification, together with a brief description of activities and the background objectives of the Regional Champions scheme, is available to download from the side of this page. Fellows interested should complete the expression of interest form and send it to Nick Hillier before Friday 21 September 2018 (nick.hillier@acmedsci.ac.uk). New Regional Champions will take office in October.
