Engaging patients, the public and professionals

We are working for a future where more people have a say in the future of health and research.

The Academy is a highly valued source of expert comment on medical science in the media. We work with journalists and the Science Media Centre to enable our Fellows and grant awardees to comment on medical science stories in broadcast and print media. Our award-winning media training is helping improve gender diversity in the media, with the ratio of female to male experts now at around 1 in 3, down from a shocking 1 in 5 in 2014.

We support medical scientists to communicate about their work and lives outside work. We offer early career researchers training and skills workshops alongside practical advice and support. We are signatories to both the Concordat on Openness on Animal Research and the Concordat for Engaging the Public with Research. We encourage researchers to share their stories and advice for others through the MedSciLife project on work-life balance.

We shape our policy advice with the views of wider society through public dialogue. Public dialogue is key part of many of our major policy reports, including: Brain science, addiction and drugs (2008); Animals containing human material (2011); Health of the public in 2040 (2016); How can we all best use evidence? (2017), and Use of patient data in healthcare technology (2018).

Our public engagement works aims to open up medical and health research to new audiences. In 2019, we opened a pop-up shop and digital campaign to encourage conversations about death and dying. The Departure Lounge was visited by over 2000 people, and is now expanding around the UK through flat pack versions used by hospices, end of life care workers and more. We have also worked with researchers to create AMSlive: short, powerful videos explaining people's science to a broader audience - watch one of the talks below and find them all on our YouTube channel.

We also reach out through our ongoing events programme and via social media - find us on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Instagram.
