Welcoming the election of two new Honorary Officers

It is with great pleasure that we announce the Academy Council has elected two new Honorary Officers: Professor Michael Malim FRS FMedSci as the new Vice President (Non-clinical) and Professor Edward Bullmore FMedSci as the new Treasurer.

We are delighted to welcome Professors Malim and Bullmore to the Academy’s Honorary Officers group. Their expertise, insight and experience will be of great benefit to the Academy.

Professor Michael Malim will become Vice President (Non-clinical). He is currently Head of the School of Immunology & Microbial Sciences and Director of the MRC Doctoral Training Partnership at King's College London. Mike is a mentor on the Academy’s acclaimed one-to-one mentoring programme and has worked with the Academy to champion the careers, research programmes and educational portfolios of basic researchers at all career stages.

Mike will also take up his position at this year’s AGM in November, taking over from Professor Fiona Watt FRS FMedSci, who is stepping down following her appointment as Executive Chair of the MRC. We are hugely grateful to Fiona for her time as an Honorary Officer and look forward to continuing to work with her in her new role.

On taking up this role as Academy Vice President (Non-clinical), Professor Michael Malim said:

“It is a true privilege to be appointed as Vice President (Non-clinical). Inspiring and nurturing a culture of world-leading discovery research is fundamental to the UK’s biomedical scientific endeavour, something the Academy champions. I very much look forward to contributing to the Academy’s vital work in supporting excellence and innovation in biomedical and healthcare research, in the UK and globally.”

Professor Edward Bullmore has been appointed as the next Treasurer. Edward is currently Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge and Vice-President of Experimental Medicine at GlaxoSmithKline R&D. He is currently serves as a Council member of the Academy and has been involved in several Academy initiatives, including chairing a roundtable on personalised psychiatry and participating in the panel of our 15th FORUM Annual Lecture on ‘The mind-body interface’ (September 2017). He will start his 4-year term of office at the Academy’s AGM on 27 November 2018, when the current Treasurer, Professor Anne Dell CBE FRS FMedSci, will step down from the role. We warmly thank Anne for her dedicated work serving the Academy over the last 4 years, during which the Academy’s income and expenditure on charitable activities has more than doubled.

On his election as Academy Treasurer, Professor Bullmore said:

“I am thrilled and honoured to be elected to follow in Anne Dell’s footsteps as Treasurer for The Academy of Medical Sciences. In only 20 years the Academy has proven itself as a tremendous force for good in the UK medical community, and I feel privileged to be in a position to contribute to further successes. I look forward to helping with the management of the Academy’s continued financial growth, together with my peers and the Academy’s strong team of dedicated staff.”

The Academy looks forward to working with these two talented Honorary Officers who will contribute to the achievement of the Academy’s strategic plans and challenges.
