Academy welcomes Government's AI Opportunities Action Plan

The Government has unveiled its AI Opportunities Action Plan, which aims to ramp up AI adoption across the UK to boost economic growth, provide jobs for the future and improve people's everyday lives.

The plan is a roadmap for government to capture the opportunities of AI.

Professor Andrew Morris CBE FRSE PMedSci, President of the Academy of Medical Sciences, said: “We welcome the Government’s bold and ambitious AI Opportunities Action Plan which marks a significant step forward in harnessing AI’s potential and transforming the healthcare sector in the UK. As we enter a new era where AI increasingly shapes how we live and work, the plan recognises both its transformative potential and the need for thoughtful implementation.

“While AI is already demonstrating value in areas like early cancer detection and clinical research, and the Government’s focus on building robust infrastructure is essential, we must remember that implementation is not solely a technical matter. Getting the basics right is crucial – particularly ensuring we have secure, reliable data systems that AI can learn from. We need adaptive regulatory frameworks that can keep pace with AI development, so we reap the benefits of improving patient care and accelerating medical research while maintaining strong safeguards for patient safety and data protection.

“Trust will be crucial for successful adoption, which is why meaningful public involvement and clear governance and ethical frameworks must be at the heart of implementation. The Academy of Medical Sciences is committed to working with Government, regulators and the sector to enable the development of regulatory processes that realise the benefits of AI while building confidence with the public.”
