I am an academic and ex-civil servant. I trained in environmental science and genetics with a PhD in Risk Assessment of Genetically Modified Crops at Reading University. I specialized in engineering biology with two postdocs: respectively at the Telethon Institute for Genetics and Medicine in Naples (https://www.tigem.it/) and at the Institute for Molecular Oncology in Milan (https://www.ifom.eu).

I was an editor at Nature and worked 2 years in Defra. I joined the Academy as head of Policy on 13/05/24 after 8 years at the Government Office for Science focussing on improving science systems in government and promoting effective engagement between government and the academic base.
