Monday 12 March 2018. Morning workshop 9.45-13.00, afternoon workshop 13.45-17.00

Cripps Court Gallery , Cambridge

Magdalene College, 1-3 Chesterton Road Cambridge

The Academy of Medical Sciences is undertaking a horizon scanning project to identify key areas of scientific research and innovation for the future.

This is one of six half-day workshops at locations around the UK, bringing together Academy Fellows, grant awardees and forward-thinking experts from a range of backgrounds. Together, we will ask them to  think forward to the year 2048 to explore what might become the most transformative areas of scientific research and innovation, and how they might affect society. The outputs from the Academy's horizon scanning project will inform our work both in the UK and internationally, including policy, future scientific meetings, and collaborations with medical researchers, funders and other stakeholders.

In Cambridge, due to high demand, we are hosting two workshops:

  • Morning: 9.45-13.00
  • Afternoon: 13.45-17.00

Participants of both workshops are invited to meet and talk over lunch (13.00).

Themes

The workshops will explore topics from both basic and clinical research, from both technical and social perspectives, seeking the ideas that will transform society by 2048. The themes that emerged from the survey will be used as starting topics to inform discussions at the workshops. As attendees bring their range of backgrounds and expertises into the interdisclinary discussions, we expect the workshops to move into new areas and bring out new themes, priorities and ideas.

Participants are not expected to be experts in specific areas of research – instead we welcome the diversity of opinion people bring by approaching discussions from a range of backgrounds, particularly as we explore wider societal impacts and expectations.

Cambridge starting topics will be: neuroscience and mental health, experimental medicine and lifestyle.

Other information

Other workshops will take place in Edinburgh, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester and Brighton (wild workshop). Click on the locations for more details. A limited number of bursaries to cover costs for all workshops are available.
