Statement on antimicrobial resistance

Infectious diseases account for about one-quarter of all deaths worldwide. In November 2013, the Inter Academy Panel (IAP) and the Inter Academy Medical Panel (now known as the InterAcademy Partnership for Health) published a joint statement, Antimicrobial Resistance: A Call for Action. The statement was endorsed by 45 national Academies, including the Academy of Medical Sciences.

The statement stresses that to successfully address antimicrobial resistance, we need to see a higher political and public profile and a cross-sectoral approach involving health, agriculture, development, economics and other policy areas.

The statement makes recommendations and emphasises that delivering these actions must be supported by new knowledge. It also notes the need for global involvement and the continuing responsibility of the academies and academy networks to advise on what is necessary and feasible.
