The Academy of Medical Sciences is proud to announce the election of three distinguished individuals as Honorary Fellows in recognition of their outstanding contributions to healthcare and biomedical science.
Professor Dame Angela McLean DBE FRS HonFREng FMedSci, Government Chief Scientific Adviser, has been elected for her contributions to scientific research and evidence-based policy advice. Throughout her career, Dame Angela has provided critical advice to government departments, synthesising complex evidence for policy decision-making. Dame Angela’s work has informed policy on issues such as infectious disease and the health effects of chemicals.
Dame Angela said: “It is a privilege to be appointed as an Honorary Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. The Academy is an important voice of the UK medical research community that has advanced the fields of biomedicine and health to help meet the challenges of today and tomorrow. I am looking forward to joining this distinguished Fellowship.”
Sir Jonathan Symonds CBE FMedSci, Chair of GSK, is also elected as an Honorary Fellow. With a career spanning finance, governance, and the life sciences, Sir Jonathan has brought invaluable expertise to the global healthcare sector. His commitment to advancing the life sciences sector through his board positions and advisory roles has had a profound impact on global healthcare and innovation.
Sir Jonathan said: “I am delighted and honoured to receive an Honorary Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences. The UK has an enviable biomedical and health research sector which is vital for the economy as well as improving the health of the country. The Academy’s work with academia, the public, policy makers and industry is important to ensuring the sector stays competitive at a global level and continues to deliver innovation to patients. I look forward to playing my part in continuing this important work.”
With extensive experience at the intersection of finance, science and policy, Sir John Kingman KCB FRS FMedSci, Chair of Legal and General Group PLC, has been recognised for his significant contribution to shaping science funding and research priorities in the UK.
Sir John said: “I am honoured and delighted to have been elected an Honorary Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. The UK has huge strengths in these fields and there are great opportunities to develop these further, something the Academy can play a critical role in fostering.”
