Academy awards £285k to promote undergraduate engagement with research

The Academy of Medical Sciences has awarded twenty-eight medical, dental and veterinary schools across the country with INSPIRE funding to engage undergraduates with health research.

INSPIRE has been part of the Academy’s career development programmes since 2012, and aims to foster a research culture in all clinicians entering the NHS, all dentists and all vets. INSPIRE projects are designed and delivered locally by academics at each institution, allowing the activities to reflect the diverse spectrum of research happening across the country. This year, the INSPIRE funding panel were delighted to see a growing number of collaborations between medical schools, which will develop and strengthen student research networks as the projects get underway.

Chair of the INSPIRE grant panel, Professor Jonathan Seckl FRSE FMedSci, said:

The Academy of Medical Sciences, most generously supported by the Wellcome Trust, is delighted to inspire the next generation of research leaders amongst the students at 28 of the UK’s schools of medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine. This crucial resource will enable students to engage in research and related activities and develop interests in discovering new solutions to the world’s major health challenges. We are particularly pleased to see so many important links between clinical schools and with industry in this round of INSPIRE projects.
