Collaboration, recognition, and leadership: How to succeed in Team Science

This event is open to all and free but places are limited. This event forms part of the Academy’s series of Career Development events.

This event has now reached full capacity. If you would like to be added to the waiting list, please email ruth.lowe@acmedsci.ac.uk, to be notified if places become available.

Succeeding in Team Science will be chaired by Professor George Davey Smith FMedSci, Director of the MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit and Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Bristol.
Professor Eleftheria Zeggini, Group Leader at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, will be delivering the keynote speech. Professor Zeggini was on the reference group for the Academy's 2016 'Team Science' policy report.

Two years ago, the Academy of Medical Sciences published a report on 'Team Science’; output-focused research involving two or more research groups. The report highlighted the increase in popularity and success of team science as researchers seek to solve global challenges to realise economic and societal benefits, whilst also highlighting some of the challenges faced. One of the main challenges was the recognition of scientists as the numbers of authors on papers continues to rise.

Succeeding in Team Science is a responsive career development event designed to enable biomedical and health researchers to seize opportunities to work collaboratively, through workshops, discussion and presentations of the latest team science research.

The event will include:

  • Professor Marcus R. Munafò presenting his research on how team science can lead to better science

  • a bespoke workshop led by Dr Sawsan Khuri focussing on team dynamics, trust and conflict resolution

  • interactive discussions with leading team scientists.

The full agenda can be viewed here.

The event will be directly followed by a networking drinks reception, which will be attended by Academy Fellows and the Team Science report reference group members. If you would like to attend only the networking reception, please RSVP to ruth.lowe@acmedsci.ac.uk

Our Career Development events are for pre- and post-doctoral researchers in biomedicine and health, to give practical skills and the chance to network with colleagues. They also offer clinical academic trainees help in navigating the clinical academic training pathway and developing a research career.  This event is part of the two-year follow up from the Academy's 2016 policy report, 'Team Science, Improving recognition of team science contributions in biomedical research,' and will allow us to examine the current landscape according to early career researchers, and take stock of the progress made since then.

This event has now reached full capacity. If you would like to be added to the waiting list, please email ruth.lowe@acmedsci.ac.uk, to be notified if places become available.
