Eleanor Maguire is Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London. She is an internationally leading expert on the brain basis of memory and in particular on the role of the hippocampal formation in human spatial and episodic memory. She is known world-wide for her work on the spatial abilities of London taxicab drivers and has shown that the acquisition of ‘the knowledge’ leads to changes in the size of parts of their hippocampus. She has provided evidence on the important link between spatial memory and more general episodic memory for everyday occurrences. Her studies have important implications for patients with hippocampal damage.
