Suicide prevention: does it work?

Many countries in the world, including England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, have developed national suicide prevention strategies. Given the many factors which can influence suicide rates it is clearly important to know if suicides can be prevented.  In this presentation there will be an initial focus on the potential effectiveness of population versus high risk group prevention strategies. Some specific suicide prevention initiatives will be described, along with evidence of effectiveness where this is available.  The limitations of suicide prevention policies will be outlined, including the powerful effects of social and economic changes, such as the recent economic recession, and the potential for government policies at such times to either counter or amplify these effects.
