Abstract
Rare monogenic diseases have traditionally been studied in their own right, viewed very separately from more common disorders. However, over the past few years unanticipated links have been identified between rare monogenic lysosomal storage diseases and common human diseases. I will discuss these links using our research into Niemann-Pick type C disease as an example and detail how therapies developed to treat this orphan disorder may paradoxicaly have much broader application in the future.
