Steven Clifford is Professor of Molecular Paediatric Oncology and Director at Newcastle University Centre for Cancer. He has made sustained transformative contributions to oncology research and its translation into improved practice worldwide. His research was pivotal to discovery of the fundamental role of the Von Hippel–Lindau tumor suppressor (pVHL) protein in oxygen sensing and tumourigenesis. These discoveries underpinned development of therapies for VHL-related malignancies. At Newcastle University he has built an internationally leading bench-to-bedside programme in medulloblastoma, central to advances in childhood neuro-oncology research and international clinical trials. His team has made fundamental discoveries through advanced genomic, biomarker, trials and functional studies, and translated these into improved molecular diagnostics, risk-stratification, and therapeutics.
