Robert Lucas is GSK Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Manchester and a world leader in the study of unconventional aspects of vision. He has worked across diverse model systems (from worms to humans), applied methodology from computational neuroscience to molecular biology, and introduced numerous technical innovations to achieve fundamental insights and pave the way for real-world application. He has maintained partnerships with both biopharma and consumer electronics industries over many years resulting in new lighting devices. He established the first method of measuring light to predict its circadian impact allowing, for the first time, sleep and circadian effects to be accounted for in specifications for lighting design and engineering.
