Reecha Sofat, Breckenridge Chair of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Liverpool, has made exceptional contributions in clinical pharmacology by applying epidemiological and statistical methods to deliver practice changing advances in health. Her work demonstrated half a million individuals missed treatment for cardiovascular disease risk factors because of health service disruption during the Covid-19 pandemic. She has applied statistical techniques to improve drug discovery, methods which have been adopted by the pharmaceutical industry. This includes using Mendelian randomisation for drug target identification and separating mechanism based from off-target effects explaining late stage failure, and target trial emulation which she has used to understand if routine health care data can be used for drug repurposing and for the prioritisation of randomised trials.
