Raj Kalaria, Professor of Cerebrovascular Pathology at Newcastle University, is an academic neuropathologist and a research trained neuroepidemiologist. He has distinguished himself as an international leader in cerebrovascular diseases and is internationally recognised as an expert in vascular dementia. He has steered projects on dementia incidence, risk factors and pathology in sub-Saharan Africa including Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa and Nigeria and is highly esteemed for his dedication to research and teaching in Africa. He is a founder of the International Society for Vascular Behavioural and Cognitive Disorders, the foremost advocate of vascular factors in dementia and currently serves as the President.
